Title: Japan stocks higher at close of trade; Nikkei 225 up 0.58%

Japanese stocks gained after the closing bell on Monday as profits in the mining, shipbuilding, chemicals, petroleum, and plastics sectors pushed stocks higher.


At the end of trading in Tokyo, the Nikkei 225 was higher by 0.58%.


Among the best performers on the Nikkei 225 were shares of JGC Corp., which jumped 14.93%, or 205.00 points, to close at 1,578.00 points. Yokogawa Electric Corp. surged 9.69% or 182.00 points to finish at 2,060.00 and Toho Zinc Co., Ltd. surged 6.70% or 179.00 points to 2,851.00 in late trade.


Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. was the worst performer, dropping 5.44% or 121.00 points to settle at 2,105.00 at the end of trading. Tokyo Gas Co., Ltd. fell 3.11%, or 73.00 points, to 2,276.00, while Obayashi Corp fell 2.95%, or 27.00 points, to 887.00.


On the Tokyo Stock Exchange, advancers outnumbered degraders with a ratio of 2338 to 1232, and 209 ended the trading session unchanged.


Shares of JGC Corp. surged to a 52-week high, up 14.93%, or 205.00, to 1,578.00.


The Nikkei Volatility Index, which tracks the implied volume of Nikkei 225 options, declined 0.24% to 28.60.


The price of crude oil for April delivery dropped 3.38%, or $3.69, to $105.64 a barrel.

Elsewhere in commodity trading, Brent oil for May delivery slipped 3.17%, or $3.57, to $109.10 a barrel, while the April gold futures contract dropped 0.37%, or 7.35, to close at $1,977.65 a troy ounce.


The USD/JPY rose 0.42% to 117.78, while the EUR/JPY gained 0.58% to 128.68.


Futures on the US dollar index fell 0.07% to 99.11.
